Temporary Protective Grounding Equipment

Forest Fruit Ice Cream

ABOUT THIS COURSE

Temporary Protective Grounding (TPG) equipment is one of the most critical safeguards available to lineworkers. Properly selected, installed, and maintained grounding equipment can mean the difference between a safe worksite and a catastrophic incident.

This highly interactive course combines practical, hands-on learning with the engineering principles behind Temporary Protective Grounding systems. Rather than simply reviewing standards, participants inspect actual grounding equipment, evaluate its condition, determine appropriate short-time current ratings, and apply Temporary Protective Grounds through hands-on exercises using actual grounding equipment and realistic job-site scenarios.

Designed and taught by nationally recognized grounding expert Gary Zevenbergen, P.E.—who has taught more than 200 utility grounding courses and serves as Chairman of the IEEE Std. 1048 Grounding for Power Lines Working Group.

This course translates complex technical concepts into practical knowledge crews can immediately apply in the field. Participants leave with a deeper understanding of not only how to properly inspect, test, and apply Temporary Protective Grounding equipment, but why each step is essential to worker safety.

THIS COURSE COVERS

  • Components and construction of Temporary Protective Grounding (TPG) equipment

  • Applicable OSHA, ASTM, and IEEE standards

  • Determining the correct short-time current rating based on available fault current and protective device clearing times

  • Hands-on inspection of cables, ferrules, clamps, and groun ding assemblies

  • Identifying damage, deterioration, and conditions requiring equipment removal from service

  • Proper installation and removal techniques through practical field exercises

  • Common grounding mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Evaluation of in-service testing methods and maintenance best practices

  • Documentation and recordkeeping for inspection and testing programs

TRAINING FORMAT

Participants actively inspect, evaluate, and apply Temporary Protective Grounding equipment throughout the course. Through demonstrations, group discussion, hands-on exercises, and real-world case studies, participants develop the confidence to properly select, inspect, test, and apply grounding equipment in accordance with industry standards and engineering best practices.
