Hazard Awareness for Craftspeople & Office Volunteers

Forest Fruit Ice Cream

ABOUT THIS COURSE

This course was developed in response to a tragic real-world event during a catastrophic ice storm, where a gas crew member lost his life while assisting line crews in power restoration efforts. Incidents like this highlight a critical reality: during large-scale emergencies—ice storms, hurricanes, wildfires, and other natural disasters—utilities often rely on personnel outside their typical roles to support field operations.

Many of these individuals—whether from gas, engineering, management, or office environments—may not have the field exposure or hazard awareness necessary to operate safely in these high-risk conditions. This course is designed to close that gap.

Through facilitated discussion, scenario-based learning, and Socratic questioning, participants will build practical awareness of the hazards present in utility environments during emergency response. The goal is not to turn office or support staff into lineworkers, but to equip them with the awareness, judgment, and preparation necessary to recognize danger, support field crews appropriately, and protect themselves in unpredictable conditions.

With over five decades of field and training experience, the lead instructor brings real-world perspective to the behavioral, environmental, and situational awareness required to navigate these events safely. Class size and duration are flexible and can be tailored to meet the needs of the organization and audience.
